MEDICAL GLOVES: Disposable Medical gloves protect healthcare workers, veterinary - animal care, research laboratories and law enforcement agencies personnel against potentially infectious materials, such as blood and body fluids, or harsh chemicals and biological risks. Disposable Medical gloves are widely used in all areas of the medical field, including acute care hospitals, physician offices, clinics, home healthcare, assisted living, daycare, alternate and long term care, as well as in the Dental Office.
Medical gloves are an important component of personal protective equipment (PPE) especially considering how often healthcare workers' and others hands are coming into contact with potentially infectious materials. Selecting the correct Medical gloves for use and incorporating proper hand hygiene compliance minimizes the risk of exposure to infectious and bio hazard material, as well as decreases the risk of spreading infection.

The protection offered by disposable Medical gloves, referred to as its barrier effectiveness, is the ability of the gloves to withstand viral penetration. Medical gloves that pass Viral Penetration Tests (ASTM1671D) provide an effective barrier against bloodborne pathogens, as mandated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
Disposable exam medical gloves are the most commonly used type of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) in research laboratories and animal care facilities. According to OSHA, employees are required to use appropriate hand protection (medical gloves) when the employees' hands are potentially exposed to hazards such as harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, punctures, chemical burns, (OSHA 1994c).

DON’T BE FOOLED - B GRADE
INDUSTRIAL GRADE GLOVES
Also known as off-line gloves or industrial grade gloves. They are not medical grade. These gloves are either made to not meet medical gloves standards in the first place, or they fail in pinhole rates or specifications in quality control, and are downgraded from medical grade to B grade. These gloves are usually labeled as disposable gloves and cannot be labeled as exam gloves, and do not provide barrier protection against Hazardous Materials, Toxic Chemicals, Biological Risks (known and unknown) and other pathogens.
It is also important to select the proper type of disposable Medical gloves for each type of use. Medical gloves only maintain effective barrier protection as long as they are intact. Traditional vinyl medical gloves have a tensile strength of about 11 MPa and are adequate for most routine nursing procedures. Newer third-generation synthetic vinyl medical gloves are softer and stronger, with a tensile strength of 13-15 MPa. These medical gloves are an excellent general-purpose option. Latex Medical gloves and Nitrile Exam Medical gloves are even more durable, with tensile strength typically in the range of 17 to 28 MPa and are recommended in applications where medical gloves are worn for a longer period of time or exposed to greater stress. Nitrile Medical gloves also have chemical barrier properties that give them an advantage when handling certain drugs or chemicals.
